I want to make school a place your child feels they belong and our classroom a place they want to act appropriately because they enjoy school. Therefore, I am putting in place a formal classroom management program; it is very effective and simple. It is based on the rules and expectations outlined below. They are as follows:
We have four basic rules to follow in our Second grade classroom:
1. Sit properly
2. Work quietly.
3. Respect Others
4. Stay on Task
Positive Reinforcement will be provided for students who follow our class rules! For those who don’t follow rules the following consequences have been put into place:
Strike 1: Warning
Strike 2: 10 min timeout ( a time out journal will be completed)
Strike 3: call home
Students can earn Zen Yen by completing transitions quickly, working quietly, and completing homework assignments etc. during a weekly period. Students will be able to take their Zen Yen to the treasure box every Friday.
Responsibility is a year long theme I promote in my classroom. It is a valuable skill that can be learned and practiced in a variety of ways. Students can make sure they come to school with a pencil, bring their homework, complete assignments, take care of textbooks, etc. Having a good grasp on responsibility will make their time in the second grade more rewarding and pleasant. This is a very exciting time and we will relish in our successes!
Why I assign homework: I believe homework is important because it is a valuable aid in helping students make the most of their experience in school. I give homework because it is useful for reinforcing what has been learned in class, prepares students for upcoming lessons, teaches responsibility and helps students develop positive study habits.
When I assign homework: Homework will be assigned Monday through Thursday, with no homework on Friday. Please note that some nights may have lighter homework and others might be a little heavier, I will do my best to keep it balanced. Spelling tests will be given each Friday. I will give students at least one week’s notice to study for all tests.
Student’s homework responsibilities: I expect students to (1) do their best job on their homework, (2) do the work on their own and only ask for help after they have given their best effort. I expect homework to be neat, not sloppy and that all assignments will be turned in on time.
Teacher’s homework responsibilities: I will check all homework and return it in a timely manner after I have recorded it in my grade book. Because I strongly believe in the value positive support plays in motivating children to develop good study habits, I will give students encouragement, and offer helpful feedback when they do their homework.
Parent’s homework responsibilities: Parents play a pivotal role in making homework a positive experience for their children. Therefore, I ask that parents make homework a top priority, provide necessary supplies and a quiet homework environment, set a daily homework time, provide praise and support, not have children avoid homework, and contact me if they notice a problem.
Study Island is a program we will be using to enhance reading and math skills. Is is also suggested this program be used at home for extra practice. Please try and have your child log on and practice 1-2 nights a week. This program requires internet access, which can be found at home, a public library, or even on a cell phone with web capabilities. Students will be given log-in information and instructions on how to use this website in class.
We have many exciting things coming up these next few months. Students have started working on their class books that we are publishing. In February we will be celebrating the 100th day of school and we will be working on a Black History Month Project. We also have Science night, Spring Carnival and Spring Concert to look forward to. Please keep your eyes open for fliers coming home regarding all of these events.
