Dear Parents,
During November in Literacy we and Science we learned; What Animals Need. Also during Literacy and Social Studies we learned about the theme; Meet My Family. This coming week we will continue to learn about our theme; “Does It Go Fast or Slow? during Language Arts, Social Studies and Science. We will continue our Math topic “Six to Ten.” We are continuing to aim for mastery, so we will explore every aspect of those numbers. We will be counting, reading and writing –numbers: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10. Coming themes will be: Winter/Family Traditions and Celebrations and Does It Sink or Float?
Thank you for being so generous with those of you who have brought in snack. We are in need of snack for the next two weeks. The children really appreciate it. If each parent would supply snack only once a month we would have enough everyday. We are in need of the following supplies in the classroom: Ziploc bags (in all sizes), dry erase markers, and of course healthy snacks. Please see sign up sheet in the classroom. The last day before Winter Break will have a classroom celebration the last hour. Look for more information and a sign up sheet on the door when it is closer to the day. Next week we would appreciate each child sign up to share their own family traditions the week before Winter Break.
Our class can also use volunteers. There are projects that can be done in class or at home. Please see Mrs. Grincewich for options and signup sheet.
Read a book together. Then ask your child to retell the story and tell their favorite part. Encourage your child to count to fifty, (higher if possible). Give help as needed. Take ten shoes of different sizes. Ask your child to put them in order from smallest to largest. Take a walk around the neighborhood. Look for letters, numbers, and words. Remember to send in reading logs. Have your student read their Workshop Way reading sheet. The boys and girls are now in reading groups. Of course, the boys and girls to continue work on a sheet nightly to reinforce their classroom practice of Math and Language Arts.

We have five basic rules to follow in our Kindergarten grade classroom:
Students should read, or be read to for 10-15 minutes each night. As you may know, every minute your child spends with a book brings him or her closer to becoming a fluent reader. Children should be practicing reading their one page Workshop Way handout.
In Kindergarten we start the journey on the road to reading by learning the letters and their sounds. Once the learn the letters and their sounds we then begin to blend them into words. We use Rigby Literacy Curriculum. It is a well rounded program that use phonics decoding skills, Shared reading, Guided reading and sight words. Children are taught many strategies for decoding words as they read.
Sight words are words that appear in text frequently or words that do not follow the phonics rules. In order to increase a child's fluency in reading, these words need to be practiced and remembered.
