Carolyn Hoeger

Dear Parents,                                                                             August 29, 2011

Bon Jour! (Hello!)  French is the foreign language experience provided in the 4th grade at IICSN.  We will be beginning with easy words, short phrases, and counting in French.

My name is Carolyn Hoeger (pronounced Hager).  Welcome back to school for the 2011-2012 school year.  I am happy to be your child’s teacher for this year, and I am looking forward to speaking with all of you.  As your child’s teacher, I believe that every child is capable of learning and that each student brings with them unique skills and abilities, as well as, weaknesses that need to be strengthened.  It is my job to help to identify these areas and to hold the highest expectations for learning and behavior possible for each student to enable his/her success.  For these reasons, and to keep a well structured and organized classroom, I begin board work and lessons immediately at 8:00 AM.  All students are expected to be prepared with pencils sharpened with a positive attitude.  Please be sure that your child has had breakfast and is on time.  It is difficult for students to do their best without proper nutrition.

This week the Student/Parent Handbook will come home.  It is important to read this with your child in order for your family to fully understand all of the school policies, dress code, behavior expectations, and the overall mission of the school.  I am also including a Student Behavior Contract, Parent Contact sheet, and Student Information sheet for you and your student to read and complete (and sign) to be returned to me on Tuesday, August 30th.  This is a homework assignment which receives credit.

SUPPLIES

Each family has already received a list of supplies by mail or during Open House this summer.  For K-4, this list includes the following:

12 #2 pencils.  Be prepared to replenish these every two weeks or so.

1 box of 24 count crayons,        1  12 inch ruler, glue sticks,          2 reams of copy paper, 1 pencil box,        2 pink erasers,         2 boxes of Kleenex,     1 pair of student scissors (fiskars),      1 two pocket folder to carry work to and from school,      1 small container of alcohol free hand sanitizer

ADDITIONAL SUPPLIES FOR OUR CLASSROOM

I require the following items as well.
1 box of colored pencils,    1 box of (non toxic markers, not permanent),   1 package of filler paper,  1  1 ½ or 2 inch three ring binder

1 copy of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis (may be found at bookstores)

1 copy ($3.00 from the book order form being sent home today) Heroes of 911 by Allan Zullo   Please return book order form by Wednesday w $3.00 for the book mentioned and any other book(s) of your child’s preference)

Students must have a book to read for silent reading (DEAR) time.

Thank you.

Homework

Homework is assigned nightly and expected back the next day, or, by the due date given.  Students will bring home a homework log with assignments each night in a manila folder, at first, which I will provide.  If you do not see this, your child is not being responsible with this important information and tasks.  Reading is a nightly expectation for twenty minutes, math multiplication and division facts for ten minutes.   There is a reading program in the classroom that reinforces nightly reading.  If your child does not complete this homework, he/she will not receive credit or rewards in class.  Book reports with due dates will be assigned periodically.  Students are expected to be accountable for homework and to get required parent signatures.

Students will be provided with notebooks which I have purchased for journal use in the areas of math, science, journal/board work, and French.  These are not to go home; they remain w the students in the classroom.

Multiplication and division facts are skills to be reviewed and reinforced in the 4th grade, however, these are skills introduced in 3rd grade.  If your child does not know how to do multiplication and division, he/she is behind and is required to make sure to have flash cards (for each) to study nightly at home.  Knowing these facts is essential to continued expansion of math skills as your student progresses this year and in higher grade levels.  The same is true for cursive handwriting.

Snacks are sometimes possible.  You may contribute snacks in bulk to the classroom in bulk for 25+ students if you like.  Healthy snacks are the only snacks that will be shared.  This might include fruit slices, pretzels, crackers, gold fish, etc.  Check with me if you are uncertain; I will not distribute highly sugared or unhealthy snacks.  We are not allowed to have colored, sugared drinks or sodas according to school policy.  However, I recommend water, especially during the hot months.  Do not freeze the water as it thaws and causes a mess on desks and may damage student work or texts.

Parent Conference days will be coming up in October.  Make sure to check the school calendar provided to you at Open House for these times and dates, as well as, other important dates and events throughout the school year.  Our annual Unmasking the Mind fund raiser will also be held at the end of October.  I am available to conference with you at other times through appointment, but not as the school day begins.  At this point, it is essential that I am teaching your children.  Please make sure to email me with any questions or concerns, or, call me at 374-4947.  My email address is carolyn_hoeger@iicsn.org

Au Revoir,  (Goodbye)

Nightly Reading Homework:

Students are to read for twenty minutes each night and record on their Reading record sheets found in their Homework Folders.

Tuesday night:
Current Event:
Students are to find a Current Event form a newspaper, online, or, library source. The following questions need to be answered:
1. Who/What is the article about?
2. When did it occur?
3. Where did it occur?
4. If applicable, How did it happen?
5. Why did it happen, or, is it in the news?

We have practiced this in class and I have sent home an actual current event that was the same for each child during the first week we did this. Please make sure that the current event is an appropriate length as this initial assignment. If you have any questions, please call me at 701 374-4947.
