Elizabeth Kressin

Welcome to First Grade!

Classroom Rules:

We help others
We are polite
We keep out hands and feet to ourselves
We take turns
We listen when others speak
We share

Behavior:

My classroom is a safe, friendly environment where lots of learning will take place! To do this, each student needs to be aware of his/her behavior and the consequences involved. Every day students will start in the green section of the classroom behavior chart. By following classroom rules and being a good friend to others, a student will remain on green. If a student is on green for the whole week, he/she will be able to choose a prize from the treasure chest at the end of the day on Friday. If a student needs behavior reminders they will move his/her clothespin further away from the green space. If this happens, the following consequences will be given:

Yellow: Warning: What can I do to fix my behavior?
Orange: Loss of 10 minutes of recess
Red: Note or phone call to parent

Each student will have a behavior folder with a blank calendar inside. Each day the student will color in the calendar box to represent which color they ended the day on. This calendar will go home with the student at the end of each month.

Homework:

Each week a homework packet is sent home to work on throughout the week. The packet contains literacy, math, and a reading log that must also be completed by having your child read at least 15 minutes each night. This packet is due back at school on Friday. There is also a weekly spelling list that goes home and a sight words folder. Spelling words should be practiced every night as well as sight words. There will be tests on both every Friday. Each student is responsible for bringing their individual sight words folder back to school on Friday morning. When a sight words list is complete, a new list will be assigned for the next week. Please remember to read with your child as well as practice spelling words! The more practice your child gets at home, the better they will do in the classroom!

Spelling:

Students are divided into 4 different spelling groups. On Monday the words of you child's group will be on the homework cover page. Please spend time practicing and writing these words at home in preparation for the weekly spelling test on Friday.

Some good spelling practice activities include:
-Writing words in sentences
-Writing words in ABC order
-Flashcards with words

Objectives:

LITERACY- ie and ight word families, vocabulary involving landforms, asking questions to determine meaning
MATH- comparing and ordering numbers to 100
SCIENCE- water cycle
SOCIAL STUDIES- treasure books, Washington DC, presidents then and now
