Second grade is a big change from first grade. Students are expected to come in knowing how to read and how to add and subtract up to 20. In second grade students are expected to be more independent workers than they were in first grade. We will work hard on mastering the second grade standards, but we will still have fun while we are doing so.
You will be working everyday on Reading, Writing, Math, Science and Social Studies. You will be reading lots of books, writing your own stories, and learning how to spell many words. We will be completing several different class projects that will help us tie all our learning together. We will even participate in Science Fair projects.
Every week, I will be posting our homework assignments for the week, and I will pass out a copy to each student on Monday morning. Please check your child's homework folder for homework calendar and reading log. Students will have reading homework every night for at least 20 minutes.
I have created a new spelling option for students. You can now go to www.spellingcity.com and find our spelling lists online. This is a great learning tool that children can take advantage of. There are games, activities, and even quizzes for them to take every week to get ready for their spelling tests. Go online now and have fun learning your spelling words.
Beginning on day one, students must learn to come to class prepared with a pencil, their homework, and must learn to complete assignments, take care of their classroom, textbooks, etc.
We are important members in our community of learners, so we must all learn that there are rules we must follow.
1. REMAIN SEATED - Back pockets on your chair.
2. TALK ONLY WHEN PERMITTED - Avoid talking without permission.
3. REMAIN ON TASK - Do classroom work and follow teacher's instructions.
4. ORDERLY DESK - Keep your desk and floor clean and orderly.
Teacher will use Behavior Chart to let parents know their son/daughter's behavior for the day.
GREEN - excellent day
YELLOW - one warning issued
ORANGE - two warnings issued
RED - three or more warnings issued. This will require a phone call home.
