Teresa Miller – First grade

A bright new year has begun!!  We are making progress towards our goal of becoming well prepared Second graders.

Reading

Each student has made progress in their reading abilities and skills. Here are a few things you can do at home to help them continue to become better readers.

  1. Read with and to your child each day.
  2. Help him/her to sound out new words.
  3. Practice Sight words
  4. Ask your child questions about what he/she has read.
  5. Let your child see you reading for pleasure.
  6. Make reading FUN.

Sight Words

Sight words are words that appear in text frequently or words that do not follow the phonics rules. In order to increase a child’s fluency in reading, these words need to be memorized. Your child needs your help in learning recognize these words. They do not need to spell these words but they need to recognize them. Spelling

Each week the students will have a list of words that they need to learn to spell. These lists will be customized to the specific needs of each child. Your child needs your help in learning to spell these words.

Math

Review

Addition and Subtraction Flash cards- We are continuing to work on our math fact skills. Flash cards are a quick and effective way to help your child master these math facts.  

 

Desert Tortoise

I teach the Desert Tortoise Global. We learn about the desert Tortoise and its habitat. We also learn about our world and its natural resources. Students are encouraged take care of our desert and our world.
