Response to Intervention

Tier I is the whole group, small group, or individual instruction in the general education classroom in targeted learning areas, typically reading, English language arts, and mathematics. Instruction is provided by the general education teacher.

At a Tier I level, students may receive a differentiated instruction that targets students showing signs of struggling in the classroom. These students are given accommodations to core instruction in an effort to assist with academic achievement.

Tier II is small group or individual instruction given outside of the general education classroom. An example of a Tier II system used at Innovations is the tutors assigned before, during, or after school to help children learn.

At a Tier II level, intervention is a service that is beyond what the other students are provided in the general education classroom. Usually, students are pulled for a short time from the classroom to work small group or one-on-one with an additional support service provider. For these students on Tier II, there is a definite area of challenge in the learning process, usually in reading, writing, or mathematics where students need extra support and accommodations in the learning process.

Tier III is an intensive small group or individual instruction given outside of the general education classroom. This is usually provided by specialized instructional individuals. An example of a Tier III system used at Innovations is those who are on a Section 504 Plan or those identified as having a documented disability and needing special education services.

At a Tier III level, students have made little or no progress in the general education classroom and demonstrate a significant need for more intensive instruction. At this point, a recommendation is generally made to evaluate for special education services or to seek medical documentation for a 504 Plan.
